Weightlifting in New Zealand
Choose weightlifting equipment as a connected setup: the bar, plates, collars and lifting area need to work together. Whether your sessions focus on Olympic lifts or controlled barbell exercises, start with the movements you train and compare the specifications of each component.
Match the bar and loading system
Look beyond the total weight you want to lift. Bar length, sleeve dimensions, grip and the room needed to load plates all affect the setup.
- Check the plate bore and collar size against the bar’s sleeves.
- Compare plate thickness as well as weight when sleeve space matters.
- For lifts involving release or dropping, check the stated suitability of the bar, plates and landing surface individually.
Plan the lifting area
A rack, bench, platform or pulling block serves a different purpose. Measure the working area and check compatibility before combining them. Storage should keep unused bars and plates accessible without narrowing the lifting space.
Frequently asked questions
Do all weight plates fit every barbell?
No. Compare the plate bore with the bar’s sleeve diameter, and confirm that your collars match. Product names alone are not a complete compatibility check.
Do I need a lifting platform?
That depends on the lifts, equipment and floor beneath the training area. Review the flooring and platform specifications and any building requirements. A platform is not a guarantee against noise or damage.
