Buying guide

Weightlifting buying guide

Build your lifting setup around the way you train. Start with the essentials—a barbell, a few useful plate options, collars and suitable flooring—then add only what your lifts and space call for.

Start with the essentials

You do not need to buy every option at once. Begin with the movements you want to train most, then choose a barbell, plate selection, collars and flooring that support them.

  • If Olympic lifting is your focus, choose a barbell suited to those lifts and plate options that let you make the smaller weight increases you need.
  • If budget is the priority, black bumper plates are the more affordable option than colour bumper plates; spring collars cost less than Lock-Jaw collars; and a hybrid barbell is still a strong option when a higher-spec bar is not the right fit.
  • Short on space? Rackable 10kg and 15kg stubby bars work with a rack while using shorter sleeves, helping you keep a barbell setup in a smaller room.

Build a compatible lifting setup

All Solid Strength Olympic barbells, Olympic bumper plates, competition plates, incremental plates, fractional plate sets and collars work together. That means you can start with the basics and add useful plate options over time without replacing the rest of your lifting setup.

The Solid Strength Pump Set System is the exception. It is a separate lifting format and is not designed to work with the rest of the Olympic lifting range.

Finish your lifting area with suitable flooring

All Solid Strength plates are suitable for dropping, with one exception: we recommend not dropping 5kg bumper plates. Their smaller surface area means they can wobble more on impact than 10kg–25kg plates, placing more pressure on the centre ring.

Flooring is an important finishing piece for any lifting area. Rubber gym tiles help protect your equipment and create a more comfortable place to train. If noise is a concern, consider 20mm flooring tiles and drop mats.

Frequently asked questions

Do Solid Strength Olympic barbells, plates and collars work together?

Yes. Solid Strength Olympic barbells, Olympic bumper plates, competition plates, incremental plates, fractional plate sets and collars are compatible with one another.

Can I drop 5kg bumper plates?

We recommend not dropping 5kg bumper plates. Their smaller surface area can make them wobble more on impact, which puts extra pressure on the centre ring.

Can I fit a barbell setup into a smaller space?

Yes. Rackable 10kg and 15kg stubby bars work with a rack while using shorter sleeves, making them a practical option where space is limited.

Shop barbells, collars, bumper plates and drop mats for a weightlifting setup. Whether you are fitting out a home gym, garage or commercial floor, choose equipment by its specifications and intended use.
